Top 6 Reasons Why Every Single Person Should Take Some Self-Defence Classes

1. GREATER DANGER AWARENESS

I often hear people say “be aware of your surroundings”. This can be a little tricky if you don’t know what you are looking for. Self-defence classes can help you identify when there might be trouble that you would otherwise be oblivious to. Seeing people get in their ‘fighting stance’ on a daily basis will help anyone get a better idea of what an aggressive person looks like.

2. UNDERSTANDING YOUR OWN CAPABILITIES

One of the best things about teaching self-defence classes is seeing people come out of their shell a lot more. If you are starting out as someone who avoids physicality of any kind, hitting pads and slipping punches might be a shock to the system. But you’ll be having a blast sparring with your classmates in no time once you quickly develop the confidence in your own abilities that you didn’t know you had all along.

3. HEALTH BENEFITS

Getting fitter, faster and stronger has to be the best side effect of taking a self-defence class. Just by going through the movements in your class, you will automatically get yourself a great workout while building your skills. Did you know that we have had students at IMC lose upwards of 30kgs while training here!

4. DEVELOPING YOUR FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE

People have a few different reactions when struck with fear. If you are more in the flight category, you should definitely consider taking Self-defence classes. This is simply an evolutionary response that can be remedied with experience. Trying something new, like a Martial Arts class might make you a little uncomfortable, but being genuinely scared is VERY uncomfortable.

5. ACHIEVE SELF-RESPECT

The practice of Martial Arts relies heavily on trust and respect. It teaches respect for each other, and respect for yourself. When you are practicing your self-defence moves you will be practicing with a partner. There needs to be mutual trust between the two of you to not hurt each other, while still training with intensity. If you do not respect yourself it is unlikely that others will respect you and have that mutual trust.

6. JUST IN CASE

Just remember - It’s better to have Martial Arts and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it.
